What are Artifacts?
Artifacts are any documents, spreadsheets, files, artwork, etc that are in used in the set-up of the Benefits-Selection system. Some of the primary project artifacts include the following:

Case Profile
The Case Profile identifies all relevant project information and deliverables.  It must have measurable components to identify what has been delivered and where we are in the project timeline.

The Case Profile includes all information to manage the project and is maintained throughout the project to keep it updated as changes or edits are made.

Implementation Timeline
An Implementation Timeline will be produced which identifies all project phases and the tasks to be accomplished within each phase. The employer should use the timeline as a guide to determine how much you or your team will need to devote to reviewing materials, testing, checking calculations, etc during the implementation process.

Employer Workbook
The Employer Workbook is usually completed by the employer or the employer’s benefit consultant and is used as the basis to develop the Benefits Definition Document.   The Workbook is a detailed questionnaire which requests information about all of the benefit plans to be loaded onto the system. It is important to complete the Workbook in its entirety.

Benefits Definition Document (BDD)
In order to configure the Benefits-Selection system, we must understand the details of each clients’ benefit plans, business rules, eligibility classifications, rates, underwriting rules, calculations, etc.

A solid software implementation process incorporates industry-proven best practices.  At Selerix, our implementation methodology follows the Rational Unified Process (RUP) in configuring and developing the Benefits-Selection system.

Each client project is approached from two different but integrated
perspectives:

  • Project Management Perspective – dealing with the financial, strategic, timing and human interface aspects

  • Technical Perspective – dealing with quality, engineering, security and design method aspects.

Project Phases

When viewed from either perspective, the project lifecycle is organized along four main phases.  Each project phase includes specific work steps and delivery of one or more artifacts (see sidebar at left for an explanation of artifacts).

Inception Phase
During the inception phase, we specify the end-product vision. We review our understanding of your business drivers and define the scope of the project.

Artifacts - Initial Draft of Case Profile, Project Timeline, Roles & Responsibilities Matrix

System Testing - Initial test planning

Elaboration Phase
During the elaboration phase, we plan the necessary activities and the required resources. We identify project risks, create a timeline, identify roles and responsibilities and develop a Case Profile.  Backend export files are defined and file specifications are collected. We also produce the Benefits Definition Document which outlines all of your benefit plans, rates, business rules, eligibility criteria and calculations.

Artifacts – Completed Case Profile, Approved Benefits Definition Document, Export File Specifications

System Testing - Test architectural baseline fits with client's benefit plan design and business rules

Construction Phase
During the construction phase we configure the Benefits-Selection system incorporating the completed Benefits Definition Document along with importing your employee, dependent and coverage data.  The system is configured by module as plan details become available. We start with the basic plan design and eligibility structure, then fill in the finer details as plans are finalized.  Usually the last elements to be configured include employee contributions for each plan. Near the end of the construction phase, Selerix will go through a series of automated and manual testing scenarios to validate the enrollment system.

Artifacts – Testing Plan, QA Test Report, Internal System Testing Complete

System Testing - Significant testing at each build

Transition Phase
In the transition phase, the goal is to ensure the requirements have been met to the satisfaction of project stakeholders. This phase begins with beta release of the enrollment system available for testing by the employer.  Other activities include site preparation, error reporting and clean-up before “go live”.  Key employees and/or enrollment representatives are trained on the system before “go live”.  The transition phase winds up after the enrollment period is over with the delivery of approved export files to the employer and insurance carriers.  Final arrangements are made for ongoing support and a post-mortem meeting to document lessons learned for future projects.

Artifacts - Admin User Training Curriculum, Final Enrollment Reports, Export Signoff From Employer & Carriers, Post-Mortem Project Meeting Complete

System Testing - Re-test fixes and regression tests
